Parent Council Meeting Notes – January 2015

The Beethoven/Ohrenberger Parent Council meeting took place on January 13, 2015, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The Beethoven-Ohrenberger Parent Council meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. The location alternates between the Beethoven Auditorium and the Ohrenberger Library.  February’s meeting will be at the Beethoven. Childcare is provided.

We had a donation of Mac desktop computers from Noble and Greenough School. This donation–combined with the previously donated Macbooks plus newly purchased Chromebooks–means there will be enough computers for students to take the PARCC online. The Ohrenberger Parent Council is buying two carts for the Mac/Chromebooks. We are also buying keyboards and mice for the desktop computers and a new power strip for the computer carts.

Mr. P is working on budget. There will be minimal staffing changes next year. He is also attending to a meeting to find out more about district-wide extended day that will affect the BTVN/O school day in the next few years.

Ms. Krakow is doing well!!

Holiday Shows: Both schools’ shows went very well. No issues or concerns. Parent and students enjoyed the shows.

Scholastic Book Fairs: The book fairs very popular. The Ohrenberger had not held a book fair in a few years; teachers, parents, and students were very happy to have it back. Thanks to everyone who volunteered!!

Care Packages for Troops: We will be sending care packages in the spring to Mr. P’s brother’s unit in Afghanistan. Each grade will be assigned an item to bring in. Wendy Loeser is coordinating.

Leadership for Next Year: We are asking parents to consider if they would be interested in a leadership role in Parent Council for next year. Elections will be held at the end of the school year. Speak with any of this year’s officers to learn more.

Making Music Matters:

Anti-Bullying Speaker: At our February Parent Council meeting, we will have guest speaker, Jodie Elgee. She is the director of the Counseling and Intervention Center for BPS. Elgee will do a brief presentation at the meeting and answer any questions from parents. We will have some light refreshments and some time to get to know each other better. Look for flyer to come home in your child’s folder.

Enrichment Program: Urbanity Dance Company coming to both schools to perform in February. Date TBD. Coordinated by Analiza Traub.

Arts and Crafts Fun Day: For Grades K1-5 on February 7, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (The snow date is Feb. 28.) Coordinated by Cindy Ho, Britt Young, and Joan Chan, this is a fun day of craft making in the Ohrenberger cafeteria. Parents must accompany their children (it is NOT a drop-off event). Cost is $2 per child. There are separate crafts for younger and older children; some to be brought home, some to be be donated to a local nursing home, and some to be sent overseas to the troops. Ohrenberger middle school students will be there to help, but we need more volunteers. We could also use donations of craft items: (anything you may have at home; no need to buy new) markers, crayons, sharpies, construction paper, beads, foam stickers, glue, beads, etc. Donations of snacks and baby wipes are also needed. Flyers went home to families. RSVP by January 31.

Incidentally, Ms. Feraro (the O school’s art teacher) is looking for donations of old CDs, balloons, liquid glue, and papier mâché mix.

Parents Rock:  April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Elks Hall in West Roxbury. Michele Sarro, chair of the event, is looking for volunteers to join the planning committee. This is adults-only, fun-filled evening with lots of raffle prizes, music, dancing, light food, and laughter. Friends and family are welcome. The 2014 Parents Rock event was very successful. Please email Michele to let her know if you can help. Also, if you have access to any raffle prizes (such as sporting tickets, hotels, spas, gyms, restaurants, etc.) through your social or professional networks, please contact Michele.
